Slovenian economy at Expo Milano 2015

Ljubljana, 3 February - At the Four Points by Sheraton Ljubljana Mons hotel today, Slovenian economic players were briefed on the opportunities to participate in the presentation of Slovenia at Expo Milano 2015. The world exhibition will be held in Milan, Italy, from 1 May to 31 October 2015.

This is the largest promotional event to be held in the world in 2015, and its importance is even greater since the world exhibition will take place in our immediate vicinity. This is an exceptional opportunity for both the Slovenian economy and for the promotion of Slovenia as a tourist destination. The aim in particular is to increase the visibility and reputation of Slovenia.

Italy is an important economic force (member of the G8). The largest share of tourists to Slovenia come from Italy, which is also Slovenia's second most important trading partner and the third largest foreign investor in Slovenia. According to 2013 data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SORS), we recorded EUR 5.9 billion of trade with Italy (Slovenia's exports to Italy reached EUR 2.5 billion, while imports from Italy totalled EUR 3.4 billion) in 2013.

The Italian market is of paramount importance to Slovenian tourism, since Italy is among the top ranking countries in terms of both the number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays (and the first according to 2013 data from SORS). Italians are mainly attracted by our coast, active holidays in the Julian Alps, spas, wellness breaks and gaming.

At today's event, Slovenian economic players were briefed on the opportunities to participate in the presentation of Slovenia at Expo Milano 2015. The participants were also addressed by the Minister of Economic Development and Technology, Zdravko Počivalšek. Opportunities for the participation of Slovenian economic players involve:
1. Economic cooperation through partnership packages

For the first time in the history of Slovenia's participation at world exhibitions, efforts are being aimed at mutual cooperation with the commercial sector. A public call has been posted at http://www.exposlovenia.si/javno-povabilo-k-partnerstvu-pri-projektu-slovenija-na-expo-milano-2015
To this end, partnership packages have been set up for companies that would like to have a presence as part of the Slovenian presentation at Expo Milano 2015. We have decided on this kind of cooperation because, according to the available information, we are among those participating countries with their own pavilions that have the least resources to spend. The funds generated by the packages sold will be primarily used to enrich the semi-annual programme.

2. Expo Business Matching

Expo Business Matching is a website or platform created as an initiative of the Milan Chamber of Commerce, Promos, Fiera Milano and PwC, and under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of the Economy and the Italian Ministry of Agriculture. The platform will allow Slovenian companies to register in a database of 8,000 companies from all over the world through the Milan Business Office (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and SPIRIT Slovenia, and present their profile and business goals, or list the partners they want to meet. The system will directly inform the company where and when to meet with potential business partners. For companies, this service is free of charge. It will soon be possible to log into the system.

3. Sectoral promotion

The sectors with the greatest interest and potential in the Italian market are the food-processing industry, wood-manufacturing, tourism, logistics, metal-processing and IT. For these sectors and sectors that have yet to express their interest, a targeted search for partners and markets in the form of outward economic delegations will be carried out, as well as the presentation of Slovenian logistics potentials and investment projects, investment conferences, participation in B2B events and meetings with foreign companies. Invitations to companies to register are soon expected to be published on www.exposlovenia.si. and www.izvoznookno.si.

During the world exhibition, events focused on the presentation of Slovenian regions and the presentation of destination and investment potentials of individual regions in terms of tourism and culture will take place. The Slovenian national day will be held on 19 June 2015. This will be an occasion for visits by Slovenia's highest representatives, for business delegations and for a diverse cultural and artistic programme.

In the context of Expo Milano 2015, several other promotional events will be held in the Slovenian pavilion (such as a presentation of tourist products and destinations, the black carbon project and more).

On 21 and 22 March 2015, as one of 12 countries from a total of 144 countries participating at Expo Milano 2015, Slovenia will present itself at the "Expo Gate" event in the heart of Milan. Again, this will be a major promotional opportunity for Slovenia.
